In winter of 1862-63, served in Quartermaster's Department.
Enlisted on 4/13/1864 in Bath County, VA., he was mustered into Company E, 46th Virginia Cavalry Battalion, as a Private.
Discharged for disability on 11/15/1864.
The 46th Virginia Cavalry Battalion was organized in February, 1864, with six companies. The unit served in W.L. Jackson's Brigade, saw action in Western Virginia, then was involved in various conflicts in the Shenandoah Valley.
After the war he again lived in Mountain Grove, VA.

Gawin Bonner, a Confederate veteran, died at the home of his nephew, Geo. R. Bonner, Sunday, after an illness of a week of double pneumonia.
Mr. Bonner was eighty-two years old last March.
He leaves an aged sister, Mrs. Mary McGuffin, and one brother, John Bonner, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C.W. Reed and interment was in Warm Springs Cemetery. The News Leader (Staunton, Virginia), May 4, 1922.
