Hamilton C. Payne was a son of Josiah Payne and Mary Cooper.
Private in the First Regiment (Caldwell's Regiment) of the Mounted Kentucky Volunteers during the War of 1812.
He married
(1) Nancy Harvey on 20 October 1818,
(2) Sarah S. Fields on 30 October 1848 and
(3) Nancy J. Brown on 26 August 1851.
Farmer.
Present in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky in 1818.
Resident of Humphreys County, Tennessee in 1820.
Resident of Fayette County, Tennessee by 1825.
Resident of Shelby County, Tennessee by 1830.
A resident of DeSoto County, Mississippi by 1836, he lived east of Hernando near where his nephew Jordan Payne (eldest son of William Payne and Sarah Burris) was also living and farming by 1836.
One of the original incorporators of the Hernando Academy, the first school in Hernando, in 1837.

NOTES:
1. The 1850 census incorrectly gives his age as "50" instead of 60. Likewise, the birth year stated on his grave marker in incorrect. Although he spent part of his youth in Kentucky, he was a native of North Carolina.
2. The cemetery where he was buried was also known as Drane – Cummings Family Cemetery (1983 transcription). USGS lists the name as Drain Family Cemetery.
