Obituary
Violet Frances Latorre Steimer, 94, of Berwick, passed away peacefully on June 12th, 2019 at the home of her daughter.

“Vi” was born on June 16, 1924 on her “Pop’s” birthday to Francesco “Frank” Latorre and Genoeffa “Jennie” Mastronuzzi Latorre at the family homestead on LaSalle Street in Berwick. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Pulsano, Italy in 1903. She was proud of her Italian heritage and customs.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four sisters: Pauline, Mary, Margaret and Nancy; and her four brothers: John, Harry, Joseph and Michael.

A faithful member of St. Joseph Church, Berwick, she was a former member of the Parish Council and worked in the kitchen for Parish functions. She had deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Violet graduated from Berwick High School in 1942. She graduated from Temple University in 1946, where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse. She began her nursing career at Berwick Hospital in 1946 as a Supervisor, and became an Administrative Assistant from 1951 until 1954. She then moved to Atlantic City, N.J. and became Director of Nursing at a long-term care facility located on the boardwalk. When her mother became ill, she returned to Berwick, where she continued her career at Berwick Hospital until retiring in 1989. She had become Head Nurse of the Obstetrics Department, where she made giving birth a family affair. The Department became known as “The Family Birthplace.” She started the Lamaze Childbirth classes, and even had “COACH” printed on her scrub top. Vi listed the birth of a baby, as well as the parents’ reaction in order to teach parents. She considered this opportunity to prepare the mother and father to assume the responsibility of parenthood the “highest of highs” in obstetrical nursing. She also spoke about the special relationship between mother and nurse: “You realize there is a strong bond between you and the woman you’re helping. The nurse will always be a special person. The woman will never forget her.”

Vi enjoyed life to the fullest. She enjoyed cooking and good times with her family. Nothing was more special to her than a holiday with good Italian food and family getting together. She also enjoyed traveling, whether in the United States or abroad, or just an afternoon ride in the car. In the last several years of her life, nothing was more fun than a day at the casino.

Vi was also an avid sports fan with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penn State Nittany Lions, and the Berwick Bulldogs at the top of her list. She would even dress the Maternity ward at the hospital with blue and white bows and ribbons, and would hang a sign saying, “The Dawgs were pups here.”

In addition to all the families in Berwick whose lives she touched, she will be greatly missed by her children: Bonnie, George and Mark Steimer, all of Berwick; her grandchildren: Raychelle Steimer and her fiancé, Rian, of Dickson City, Justine Steimer and her partner, Scott, of York, PA, and Chad Steimer, Daniel Steimer, and Jason Steimer and his wife, Jenna, all of Berwick; and three great-grandchildren: Noah Jacob, Elizabeth Violet and Ayden Michael.

A visitation will be held Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 721 Monroe Street, Berwick, with the Rev. Matthew R. Larlick, her pastor, officiating as Celebrant. Committal will be private.
The family will provide flowers. Donations in her memory can be made to: Commonwealth Hospice of Berwick, 1409 N. Market Street, Suite 202, Berwick, PA 18603, or to: St. Joseph Catholic Church, 730 Washington Street, Berwick, PA 18603.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., Berwick.
