ELSTON, ISAAC COMPTON
Banker; born Crawfordsville, Ind., Feb 5, 1836; son Isaac C and Maria E (Aiken) Elston; educated in Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind., and the Universtiy of Michigan; married, Marietta, Ohio, Aug 7, 1862, Sarah S. Mills; children: Maria, Katherine, Mary, Nancy, Isaac C. (3d) and Joan. Established First National Bank of Mephis[sic], Tenn., 1864; broker in Cincinnati, 1866; took charge of banking firm Elston & Co., 1868 and conducted private bank as manager for many years, with Gov. H.S. Lane and Gen Lew. Wallace (his brothers-in-law) as partners. In 1905 the bank entered the National banking system. President Elston National Bank. Poston Paving Brick Co., Greenstreet Folding Box Machine Co., Crawfordsville Wire Bound Box Co., Yount Wollen Mills Co. vice-president Indiana Match Co., and director Union Trust Co., Indianapolis, and Oak Hill Cemetery Co. Was lieutenant and captain Company I. and major of 11th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and lieutenant-colonel and aide-de-camp U.S. Volunteers, on staff of Gen Wool in Civil War and chief of staff of Gen Lew. Wallace with rank of colonel. Republican; Presbyterian. Member of Military Order of the Loyal Legion, Grand Army of the Republic, Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
