Mary Frances Wortman was the daughter of Franklin Wortman (buried at Witts Springs, Searcy County, Arkansas, Cemetery) and Elizabeth Turney Wortman (thought to be buried at Snowball Cemetery, Snowball, Arkansas, where her parents, Lemuel and Mariah Taylor Turney are buried). Mary Frances Wortman married George Washington Cossey on June 12, 1880, and they had a son, John Hillry Cossey. According to Social Security Index Records, John H. Cossey was born May 13, 1884, but other records (marriage license) have later dates (1888). Family stories report that Mary F. Cossey died shortly after giving birth to John H. Cossey, which is why her date of birth is listed as 1884-1889. Other dates, like the one showing when he married his second wife, Louisa Parrish, support the 1884 birth of John H. and death of Mary Frances. For years Mary Frances rested in an unmarked grave near Emma Pack, the daughter of George Washington Cossey and Louisa Parrish (and young wife of Jesse Monroe Pack). In fact, many of George Washington's descendants with his second wife never knew Mary Frances existed. Through the efforts of cemetery researchers and family, Mary Frances Wortman Cossey now has a marker. This matriarch of a large Cossey family was gone too soon, but we have not forgotten her.
