RIVERTON--Loyd Berdell Petersen Sr., our loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away in his sleep October 24, 1996, at the Draper Rehab and Care Center.

Loyd was born March 22, 1915 in Castle Dale, Utah to Delbert and Ethel Day Petersen. He was the oldest of five children. Married to Harriet Ellen Hawkins, July 2, 1945 in the Manti Temple. This marriage was blessed with five children.

Loyd worked as a janitor for schools and churches, a truck driver and as a miner he worked 24 years in the Horse Canyon and Lark Mines. He also worked in home construction.

Loyd held many church and civic positions. At one time he was elected County Attorney in Moab, Utah. Loyd and Harriet served in the Harrisburg Pennsylvania Mission (1978-1980). After serving their mission, they were called as Ordinance Workers in the Jordan River Temple from 1981-1991.

He will be remembered by his family and friends for his cheerfulness, honesty, generosity, and his optimistic attitude.

Loyd was a talented harmonica player and entertained in church, nursing homes, senior citizen centers and church socials and was a member of a musical group for more than 10 years.

He enjoyed writing poetry. He could be seen in the Riverton Town Days parade clowning around and sharing a laugh and a joke with the crowd. Many people smiled and cried with the harmonica man "Grandpa Pete".

Loyd is survived by his wife, Harriet; children: Julie (George) Dansie Sr., Vern Sr. (Nina), Glen (Teresa), Halene (Dan) Dahlstrom and daughter-in-law, Elaine petersen; also 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Clay I, Dale, and Delbert. Preceded in death by his father and mother, baby sister, brother Herbert, stepfather Horace Rutledge, and his son, Loyd Berdell Petersen Jr..

The family wishes to express thanks and gratitude to all those who helped in any way with Loyd's care during his four month stay at the Draper Rehab and Care Center.

A viewing will be held Sunday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Broomhead Mortuary in Riverton. Funeral services will be held Monday at the Mindi Meadows Ward, 13400 So. 2361 West, Riverton, where friends may call one hour prior. Interment Redwood Estates.
