She was born May 8, 1924, in York, South Carolina, to the late Frank Marion Simrill and Lilly Preston Currell Simrill. She grew up in York, and attended Converse College, as well as the University of South Carolina.
Mrs. Manning was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a devoted member of St. Monica and St. Theresa's Church Chapter. She was also a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of South Carolina, the Greenville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Quadrille Club, the Monday Book Club, the Assembly in Columbia, the Debutante Club in Greenville, and the Silver-Haired Jocks of Louisville, Ky. She was a past member of the Junior League.
Known as "Honey" to her grandchildren, she was truly beloved by all who knew her. Her passion for life and fun was unsurpassed. She loved to laugh, and to be surrounded by family and friends. She considered every get-together a "great" party. In fact, she thought of everyone she ever met as a friend. Always active, she loved to travel and play bridge and tennis. She held a variety of jobs. Her favorite was as a substitute teacher in Easley, where she made numerous friends of all ages.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, and four children, Susan Sheard and husband, Jack, of Tallahassee, Fla., Wyndham Manning III and wife, Bunny, of Jacksonville, Fla., Laura Williams and husband, David, of Columbia, S.C., and Frank Manning and wife, Campbell, of Greenville. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jackson Sheard Jr. and wife Marlene, Susanna Sheard Kuenn and husband Jeff, Wyndham Manning IV, Emily Manning, Elliot Manning, David Williams, Lolly Williams, Quinn Manning, Neil Manning, and Margaret Manning; great-grandchildren, Ryan Sheard, Isabella Sheard, and Preston Kuenn; sister, Nancy Simrill Landstreet of York; and brothers-in-law, Ben Smith of Baltimore, Md., and Bernard Manning of Columbia. She was predeceased by her brother, Frank Simrill, and sister, Lilly Simrill Smith.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in honor of her support of her grandson, Neil, at 37 Villa Road (B-111), Suite 109, Greenville, SC 29615 (864-770-0276); and the American Cancer Society, the Look Good, Feel Good Program, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville 29615.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 19, at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenville, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Dannals and the Rev. Ted Duvall officiating, followed by a reception at McCall Parlor. Interment services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 20, at the Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg in Sumter County, with the Rev. Richard Archer officiating.
