He was one of the four ministers who presided at George Washington's funeral on 18 December 1799. He built Salona Hall in Fairfax County, Virginia (c. 1805). During the War of 1812, President and Mrs. James Madison stayed at Salona during the burning of Washington by the British.
Rev. Maffitt was originally buried at Salona. His remains were reinterred at Lewinsville Presbyterian.
