-Iris Mahan Hutchinson, 81, died on Monday, January 1, 2018, at Trinity Oaks Lutheran Home. Iris was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on July 5, 1936, to the late Garland and Lizzie Thornton Mahan. She taught public school for over 25 years in Virginia and North Carolina. Iris was involved with The United Methodist Women for over 40 years. She taught Sunday School, was involved with the Lake Junaluska Assembly, including the Garden Club, and the Junaluska Woman’s Club. Iris volunteered with Meals on Wheels and enjoyed cooking/baking, quilting and basket weaving. Iris is survived by her husband of 50 years, the Reverend Charles Hutchinson; a son, Jonathan Hutchinson; sisters, Frances R. Mahan, Lunell Mahan, Beulah Dale Mahan, and Isla Wiles (Allen); a brother, James Mahan (Teresa); and nieces and nephews, Steve Sandridge (Gretchen), Kevin Sandridge, Elaine Tyndall, Matthew Wiles, Becky Mahan Roberts (Will), and Robbie Mahan. A memorial service celebrating Iris’ life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 20, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church with the Reverend Curran Welch and the Reverend Kitty Crain officiating.
