On 5 May 1857 Leonard married Philanda Hastings, 21, at Clinton, MA, in a first marriage for both. They had two boys, Willie and George.

On 12 Jul 1861 Leonard, a machinist, mustered into service with Company C, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Clinton, MA. He was 27 years old.

On 17 Sep 1862 Leonard was wounded at The Battle of Antietam, Washington County, Maryland, on the arm. He died on 27 Sep 1862 at Washington County, Maryland, of wounds received at the Battle, his arm having been amputated, according to his pension file. He was 28 years old.

On 2 Dec 1862 Philanda received a widow's pension based on Leonard's service.

Philanda was enumerated as the widow of Leonard M. Towsley, of the 15th Massachusetts, in the 1890 Veterans' Schedules of the US Federal Census in Jun 1890 at Clinton, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

In 1896, Leonard was included in "The History of Clinton, Massachusetts." On 17 Sep 1900 Leonard was included on the Civil War memorial at Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Maryland, as having died of his wounds received at the battle.

Philanda, his wife, outlived Leonard and died on 22 Aug 1908 at Norwich, New London County, Connecticut, and the death was registered in Massachusetts; she was age 72.
