Edward Ernest “Ernie” Baird passed from death into life on May 28, 2019. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 1, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Hereford, Texas at 10:00 AM with Pastor Chris Flickinger officiating, burial to follow at West Park Cemetery of Hereford. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford. Family and friend visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00-8:00PM at the funeral home.

Ernie was born to Olen and Irene Baird on July 8, 1935 in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. In 1947, the Baird family moved to Floydada, Texas to farm. Ernie graduated from high school in Floydada and in 1958 was drafted into the US Army. After serving his country, he returned to Hereford, Texas, where he made his home for the next 59 years. Before marrying at age 39, he lived a lifetime of future legendary stories. During this time, he hunted, fished, drove fast cars, worked hard to help support family, and was active at Westway Baptist Church. At church on a Sunday night, he met Mary Ruth Weaver and months later they were married on November 27, 1974. Ernie and Mary Ruth had two sons, Matthew and Trevor. Ernie loved taking his family to Cuchara, Colorado to spend summer nights around a camp fire with fishing and hiking during the day. In 1996, Ernie retired from West Texas Rural Telephone. After retirement, he spent time almost every day with his mother, Irene, who lived to be 97. As Ernie grew older, his favorite endeavor was being with his five grandchildren, which he adored more than anything in the world. When he wasn’t with them, he could be found watching a John Wayne movie or catching up on the weather report. Ernie will be remembered for his epic stories of adventure, tenacious disposition, inordinate pride in his children and grandchildren, and his deep love for his family.

Ernie is survived by his son Matthew Baird and wife Lee of Brownfield, Texas; his son Trevor Baird and wife Lauren of Odessa, Texas; the mother of his children and forever friend, Mary Ruth Baird of Dimmitt, Texas; his six grandchildren: Levi, Jonah, Malachi, Lottie, and Jack; two brothers, Lawrence Baird and wife LeDon; Ross Baird and wife Linda; two sisters, Pearl Timms and husband Johnny; Olinda Hale and husband Michael; along with a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Ernie is preceded in death by his parents.
