Warren G. Gibson, died peacefully surrounded by family on May 22, 2019. He was born in Roscoe, Texas, to the late John William and Grace Emory Gibson on August 8, 1925. He was the fourth of their five children together. At the age of three, after losing both of his parents in a pneumonia epidemic, he and his older siblings went to live at the Methodist Children’s Home in Waco, where he grew up and established many life-long friendships. He was proud of the fact that he earned his Eagle Scout in 1939 at the age of 14, and was for a short time, the youngest Eagle Scout in Texas. He left “the home” at the age of 16 and moved to Dallas with his older sister and family where he graduated from W. H. Adamson High School. He looked forward every year to attending Homecoming, and in 1992, he was honored by Methodist Children’s Home Alumni Association as Outstanding Alumni of the Year.

At the tender age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II as an Aviation Ordinance Mate on a Martin PBM Mariner (patrol bomber), surviving two plane crashes at sea. He earned numerous medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two gold stars. He was honorably discharged on his 21st birthday and returned to Dallas to be with family. Shortly after his return, he began a printing apprenticeship, which was to become his life-long profession. More importantly, he met and married the love of his life, Billie (Spears). Their marriage lasted 64 years, until Billie’s death in 2012. Together, they had one daughter, Martha.

In 1961, Warren and his eldest brother purchased Sheegog Printing Company in Dallas, which he continued to operate until his retirement in 1997. Shortly after retirement, he took up the game of golf with some of his friends from “the home” and some terrific new friends. Until last November, Warren and his “golf buddies” were playing 18 holes three times and week. Dad loved golf so much he didn’t mind the 80-mile round trip!

Dad loved to tell stories which were filled with interesting tidbits of information, and always entertaining. We will always remember his great sense of humor, his sweet smiles, and his generous nature. He is survived by his daughter, Martha and son-in-law, Marcus (Newman); his grandchildren, Tyler Newman, Elizabeth and Reggie Nelson, and David Newman; his precious great-grandchildren, Teryn and Tyler Grace Nelson; sister-in-law, Martha Martin; and many much-loved nieces and nephews. We are all grateful to be blessed with his presence in our lives for such a long time.
