John was the son of (William) Perry Tarpenning and Elizabeth (Russell) Tarpenning. Born in Hamburg, Iowa, he was married to Eliza (Ludington) Tarpenning. John and Eliza had three children. He was survived by daughter Mrs. Van (Zella)Timperley of Norfolk, daughter Mrs. Hans (Sylvia L.) Petersen, Omaha; and son Morris Tarpenning. He was a retired farmer. John is buried next to Eliza and many members of the Ludington family at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Omaha.
