April Phillips Langwell, 78, of Palmyra, MO passed away Tuesday May 21, 2019 at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra, Missouri.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday May 25, 2019 at Little Union Baptist Church in Palmyra, MO. Brother Chris Combs will officiate. Burial will be at Little Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday May 24, 2019 at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra, MO.
April Karen Phillips was born April 24, 1941, in Hannibal, Missouri, to Harold and Ruth Phillips. The oldest of three children, she graduated from Palmyra High School in 1959 and the University of Missouri in 1963 with an education degree. After a jaunt modeling and waiting tables at Dinah’s Pancake House in Los Angeles she returned to Missouri to teach foreign language in Marceline. There she met Leonard Langwell, married, and had one “Kid,” April Lynn. After divorcing she returned to her native Palmyra where she lived and loved the remainder of her life.
April then established herself at Palmyra High School for 22 years where she taught French, Spanish, and Speech, and oversaw the 4th period lunchroom. She was beloved by many students who had the privilege to be pushed farther than most high school students appreciate. Over the years she coached basketball, tennis, and golf. She was known for her outgoing personality, frankness, pearls of wisdom, and bright and beautiful wardrobe.
April loved to travel to Europe, play golf, and listen to Willie and Waylon. She was a master bridge player and enjoyed painting watercolors and creating beautiful calligraphies of her favorite poems.
Her faith and her daughter were the center of her life. She was a lifelong member of Little Union Church where she taught Sunday school, served as secretary, and led the singing every Sunday. After she retired from teaching, she volunteered at Maple Lawn Nursing Home where she sang old church hymns to the residents every Monday.
April was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Paul Rutledge. She is survived by her daughter April Lynn of Alexandria, Virginia; two grandsons, PFC Clayton Zollmann (USMC) of Camp Pendleton, California, and Chase Zollmann of Laramie, Wyoming; her brother and sister-in-law, Brock and Cathy Phillips of Palmyra; her sister, Janice Rutledge of Springfield, Illinois; her nieces Anne Rutledge of Springfield, Illinois, and Lee (Travis) Gosney of Palmyra; her nephew Paul Scott Rutledge of St. Louis; and two great nephews, Kevin and Kaleb Gosney of Palmyra.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support the students of Palmyra High School continue their education by contributing to the April Phillips Langwell Scholarship fund.
Pallbearers will be PFC Clayton Zollmann, Chase Zollmann, Paul Scott Rutledge, Travis Gosney, Benji Mook, and Louie Vannatta.
