Kay was the oldest child of C.P. Sanders, Jr. and Rita Cone Sanders.

In 1962, she met the love of her life, Lewis Sword, and married him in February of 1963. They had two daughters and their little family of four had countless adventures together, from the Grand Canyon to Pikes Peak to the Smoky Mountains and the beaches of South Carolina. The foursome took fishing trips to Athens, Palestine and Lake Texoma, explored the woods of East Texas and panned for gold in the mountains of Colorado.

Kay was a knowledge seeker - always reading or working a crossword or a jigsaw puzzle, always curious to find answers to her questions. Although she despised technology, she was always asking "Look that up for me on your machine". She spent her life focused on her husband and family and welcomed her sons-in-law into the fold with the same ferocious love she had for her husband and daughters. She had the heart of a lion and was surrounded by love until the day she died.

While she spent most of her adult life in Texas, a part of her heart stayed in the Low Country, where she was born. She will forever be missed -
