CLAUDE L. BATSON, about 50, a member of a wealthy Mississippi lumber family, was found dead tonight of a pistol wound, Sheriff Virgil Burge said. He said Mr. Batson's body was found near some turkey blinds a few miles
from his home in Orvisburg, about five miles northeast of here. A revolver with one shot fired, and a .20-gauge shotgun, were found lying near the body. Sheriff Burge said Pearl River County Coroner George Stockdale conducted a hearing at the scene and that the jury continued the hearing until 9 a.m. tomorrow for further evidence. He had gone to the turkey blinds alone to inspect them in preparation for a hunt, the sheriff said witnesses told him.

Mr. Batson is the son of Randolph Batson, who built a South Mississippi saw mill and lumber empire in the area before he died here Oct. 23 at the age of 85. The family controls some 14,000 acres of pine timberland now employed in a giant reforestation program.

Mr. Batson leaves his wife and two sons, Dr. Blair Batson, Vanderbilt university, and John Batson, Yale University. The McDonald funeral home here listed other relatives as three brothers, Col. Roscoe Batson, Hillsdale; Oscar Batson, Lyman, and Schuyler Batson, Jackson; two sisters, Mrs. Will Minor, Columbia, S.C., and Mrs. Bertha Hatten, Gulfport.
