Louis A. Davis Dies;
Veteran GAO Employee
Brother of General

Louis Alexander Davis, 68, of Landover, Md., veteran General Accounting Office employee and older brother of Brig. Gen. Benjamin O. Davis, only Negro general in the Army, died yesterday in Freedman’s Hospital. He had been ill five weeks.

His deportment there was noticed by an admiral, who helped him to transfer to the Post Office Department, which he considered a more promising field. He became a clerk, then transferred to the General Accounting Office, where he remained 43 years. He worked in the postal money orders section of the GAO until that division was moved to Asheville, N. C., during this war. Then he changed to the claims section, where he was employed when he died.

Mr. Davis is survived by his widow, his mother, Mrs. Henrietta Davis, 90. of Landover; eight daughters, Mrs. Olivette D. Brown, Washington; Mrs. Henrietta D. Stockett, Providence, R. I.; Mrs. Isabelle D. Lawton, Landover; Miss Hilda A. Davis, dean of women at Talladega (Fla.) College; Mrs. Rhoda D. Jones, Washington; Mrs. Thalia D. Thomas and Mrs. Norma D. Jones, both of Ardwick, Md., and Mrs. Jeanne Marie D. Howard, Baltimore. A son, Louis A. Davis, jr., was killed in an accident three years ago when about to enter the armed forces.

Gen. Davis, the surviving brother, is in France. Gen. Davis’ son. Col. B. O. Davis, jr.. is commanding officer of Godman Army Air Base.
