Mabel Blaydes, 87, of 908 Edgewood Rd., Bluefield, died Thursday at a Bluefield Hospital following a long illness. Born in Bonne Terre, Missouri August 6, 1895, she obtained the rank of second lieutenant in the nursing corps during World War I and was nursing supervisor at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary prior to coming to Bluefield in 1922. During world War II, she served as an active member of the American Red Cross. In Bluefield she became a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and Circle. She was a charter member of the Bluefield Garden Club. Other activities included membership in the Auxiliary of Mercer County Medical Society and Auxiliary of American Legion. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Blaydes Foundation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Elliott Blaydes, M.D.; two daughters, Elizabeth Blaydes and Nancy Blaydes Pride, and grandson, James Elliott Blaydes.
Survivors include one daughter, Boyd Blaydes Beamer of Atlanta; one son, J. Elliott Blaydes Jr., of Bluefield; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Mercer Funeral Home from 7 until 9 today.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 Saturday at Mrs. Blaydes Home, 908 Edgewood Road in Bluefield, with Rev. Roger Gulick and Rev. Patterson officiating. Entombment will follow at the Monte Vista Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers: William Blaydes, Stephen Blades, James and Thomas Pride, Andrew Lewis, George Walker, and Modena Rudolph Reed. Flowers may be sent to the Mercer Funeral Home or memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Blaydes Foundation.
