Melvin Benno Kraft left us to be with his God on the evening of May 10th at the age of 95 and is now resting in peace. Melvin was born on November 4, 1923, in Guadalupe County to Alvin and Edna Schuenemann Kraft and moved with his parents to their farm on Hunter Road in 1929. Melvin’s German heritage was strong. His great grandparents Heinrich and Kathryn Roege Kraft were part of the group of founding fathers of New Braunfels. He married Eileen Stabenow, his wife of more than 73 years on June 9, 1945. Upon their marriage Melvin and Eileen moved to the farm on Hunter Road in Comal County that Melvin had purchased and lived there until his passing. Working on improvements to the home and property was one of Melvin’s great passions in his life. The last 13 years were spent there with their son Roger. Melvin and Eileen lived there almost 74 years. Melvin farmed and also worked for 26 years for the Texas Transportation Department as a heavy equipment operator, primarily as a maintainer (road grader) operator. He was very proud of his skill in operating this piece of equipment. Melvin enjoyed hunting on his property and making sausage. He also enjoyed going to auctions and buying antiques and just stuff in general. Melvin was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Braunfels for more than 50 years. Melvin many times in his life gave freely of his time and energy to assist other when help was needed. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Calvin Kraft, and his sister Gloria Bading and her husband Clifton. He is survived by his wife of more than 73 years Eileen, his three sons Bryan and wife Gloria, Roger, and Bruce and wife Cheryl. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and sister-in-law Loraine Kraft and many other relatives and friends. Other special survivors include longtime friend of the family Frances Blevins and her son Beau and his family. Last but not least is his dog and best friend Ridgey who misses him dearly as we all do. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Zoeller Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019, 10:00 a.m. at Comal Cemetery.
