Mrs. Gumpert Dies in Hospital.
Mrs. Margaret Gumpert, who disposed of her household effects at Callicoon Center last fall and went to New York to live with her daughter, Mrs. Benjamin, died at a hospital in that city on Jan. 12, after an operation for gallstones on Jan. 2. She had been ailing for some time and entered the hospital on Dec. 3. Burial took place in Lutheran cemetery on Jan. 15. Mrs. Gumpert was born in Germany 70 years ago, a daughter of John and Margaretha Graff, who came to this country in 1848 and settled on the farm at Callicoon Center now occupied by George Heller. At the age of seventeen Margaret was married to Gottfried Gumpert, who conducted a farm and saw mill up Bethelhem creek from Callicoon Center. In 1869 they moved to New York, where the husband took a job in a furniture factory. Eight years ago they returned to Callicoon Center, where Mr. Gumpert died in June, 1912. Mrs. Gumpert leaves, besides her daughter in New York, two sons, John of Brooklyn and Frank of Connecticut; also three brothers and one sister—Fred Graff of Callicoon Center, Ernest L. Graff of Oxford, Henry Graff of Jeffersonville, and Mrs. Carl Neppach of New York.
