Jan Lee Schaefer, 68, of Staunton, Illinois passed away Friday, May 3, 2019 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

Born January 8, 1951 in Litchfield, Illinois, he was a son of the Late Mr. & Mrs. Elton O. “Peck” & Marcella M. (Wall) Schaefer. He married Pam Behrens on October 16, 1971 & they later divorced.

He worked as a Correctional Officer at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro, IL for 22 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton – Board of Evangelism at Zion; Bocci Club of Concordia Hall of Staunton; Big Cardinals fan; author of 2 short stories. Jan also enjoyed gardening & landscaping and had a great love of humor/sarcasm. He was a doting father & grandfather & a humble philanthropist.

He is survived by 2 Daughters, Janeen (Michael) Griewing of Edwardsville, Illinois and Danelle (Buddy) Bartels of Mahomet, Illinois; 5 Grandchildren -Brayden & Eastyn Griewing, Kameron, Marinne, & Estella Bartels; Former Spouse & Good Friend - Pam Schaefer of Hillsboro, Illinois; Sister-In-Law -Sharon Schaefer of Staunton, Illinois; 2 Nephews -Jeff & Kevin Schaefer.

Besides his parents, Jan was preceded in death by 1 Daughter -Krista Schaefer; 1 Grandson, Isaiah Griewing; and 1 Brother -Ronnie Schaefer.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 10, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton with Rev. Kelly Mitteis officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton.

Memorials are suggested to the family for Neurological Research in Jan’s memory, Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton, or to Adopt-A-Pet of Benld.
