Obituary – The Ellis Review-Headlight September 4, 1896 p. 4

We hare called upon to record the death of Carlos M. Kingsley, a prominent farmer of Smoky Hill township, at his home last Saturday, after only a few days illness. Mr. Kinglsey was highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral services were held on Sunday conducted by Rev. Moore of Hays. The exercises at the grave were conducted by the A.O.U.W. of which order Mr. Kingsley was a member.

Carlos M. Kinglsey was born in Orleans, Co., N.Y. May 12, 1842. The following year his parents moved to Joliet, Ill., where his father died within two years. His mother removed to Michigan, where she died when he was 7 years old. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the army in a Volunteer Co. of Ill. light artillery and ranked as 1st sergeant. He took [sic] part in the battles of Forts Henry and Donelson. Received a pistol shot in the thigh from a careless Union soldier while in camp at Shiloh. Returned to Michigan and acted as guard in the state prison at Jackson, Mich., for one year. August 25, 1863, he was married to Mary E. Winton, of Litchfield, Mich. He engaged in farming near Jackson, Mich., and later in Erie Co., Pa., until April 1878, when he moved to Ellis county, Kas. He was always a sufferer from the effects of his service in the war. He leaves a wife and four children, May C. F.W., D.C., and Harrison M.
