He worked in the accounting division of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, from 1948 until retiring in 1981. He also worked as an associate professor of accounting at Moravian College, Bethlehem, was chairman of the business and economics department at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, from 1988 until 1993, and was a tax preparer for H&R Block.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Violet May (McCartney) Bannon. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown and Christ Lutheran Church, Lewisburg. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member and past treasurer of the Lewisburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lewisburg Disabled American Veterans. He was a 1947 graduate of Muhlenberg College with a degree in business administration and a 1967 graduate of Lehigh University with a masters degree in business administration. George was a national vice president and member of the National Executive Committee of the Institute of Managements Accountants, Lehigh Valley Chapter. He was a member of the West Allentown Kiwanis and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Lutheran Church Synod, examining and consultation committees.
Survivors: Wife; son, Terence G. Bannon and his wife, Annette, of Schnecksville; daughters, Patricia A. Coyle of Easton, Kansas and Christina A. Wargo of Lewisburg; nine grandchildren.
Services: will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday in the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 16th and Hamilton streets, Allentown. Calling hour will be held on Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be private.
