Rev. Abel Skinner Barter was the husband of Mary A. (Elger) Barter. They were married in 1857. Mary died in 1895. Rev. Barter was a minister in the Black River Conference and Northern New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was licensed to exhort at Heuvelton, New York August 10, 1849. - licensed to preach at Gouverneur, New York January 3, 1852- admitted in full connection June 4, 1858 - ordained Deacon by Bishop Ames June 6, 1858 - ordained Elder by Bishop Simpson April 22, 1860.
