Kenneth W. Cory, 88, of Jerseyville died on Tuesday April 30, 2019 at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jerseyville. Born in Kane on Feb. 10, 1931, he was the son of the late George and Marjorie Cory. He married the former Mary Journey in Eldred and she preceded him in death in December of 2017. They lived on a farm in Kane and later moved to Bethalto.
Surviving are his children: Cathy (husband Larry) Prough of Carrollton, Dennis Cory of Wood River, grandchildren: Michelle (husband Jim) Cox, Carrie (husband Brian) Hill, Michael Cory, Brandon (fiancé Renae) Cory, 3 great-grandchildren, a brother Thomas Shaffer and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a granddaughter: Kelly Jo Prough, a brother Donald Cory and a sister Toinette Dixon.
Kenny graduated Carrollton High School in 1948 and briefly attended Illinois State University before joining the U.S. Navy in 1950. He served his country on board the USS Belle Grove stationed out of Guam during the Korean War until his discharge in 1954. He was very proud of his service years and continued to attend reunions of the USS Belle Grove crew members. After the Navy, Kenny worked at Alton Box Board, retiring after 43 years.
He was a member of the Kane Masonic Lodge. He was an officer in the United Paper Workers International Union AFL CIO for many years. He was a life member of the Alton VFW and the Kane Methodist Church. Kenny had also served on the Carrollton School Board.
He took the greatest pride and derived the greatest joy from his grandchildren, sharing in their accomplishments. He was known for his magical smile and will be sadly missed.
Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday May 7, 2019 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Carrollton.
Memorial services will be held immediately following the visitation at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans Honor Guard.
