Pioneer Newspaperman and Printer of California and Arizona. The son of Barber H. and Cornelia Bancroft, he came from Ohio to California in 1872, settling in Anaheim. In the late 1870s, he learned the printing trade in Los Angeles, and then went to Arizona to work for the Tucson Star newspaper. From 1884 to 1885, he was the publisher of the Arizona Republican newspaper in Yuma, and he also served on the Yuma County Board of Supervisors and as a Justice of the Peace. He joined the Typographer's Union in 1888. Returning to California, he worked for the Los Angeles Morning Herald, and in 1892 he was the president of the Los Angeles Typographical Union. During the early 1900s, he operated the Mergenthaler linotype machine for the Santa Barbara Morning Press. He spent his final years back in Los Angeles, working for the Evening Herald. Husband of Helen F. Bean, they married in Los Angeles in 1891. He was also well known as a musician.
