William Marion “Billy” Caldwell, Sr., age 79 of the Cove Community, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Doctors Hospice in Fayetteville, Ga.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Cove Baptist Church, with William Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers; Austin Hobbs, Andrew Hobbs, Will Caldwell, Greg Brown, Frankie Brown, Kevin Brown, Lamar Brown, Bucky Brown, Buck Prather, and Chuck Caldwell. Honorary pallbearers will be his fellow members of the “Old Men’s Club”.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Cox Funeral Home in Manchester.

“Mr. Billy”, as he was best known, was born November 26, 1936 in Talbotton, Ga., the son of William Patrick Caldwell and Maude Pauline Gilson Caldwell. He attended Manchester schools and afterwards served in the U. S. Army. He was actively involved in the ownership of several businesses, including farming and the operation of a heavy-equipment and construction business. His many friends often joked that his office was his regular seat in the Huddle House and Tant’s Café in Manchester. He was a member of Cove Baptist Church and the Meriwether County Cattleman’s Association. He was the organizer and host of a largely attended gathering of friends, which takes place on the Flint River and is known locally as “The Old Men’s Club.” Billy loved hosting this gathering and was well known for the Brunswick stew he prepared for the yearly event. He also enjoyed sitting in his swing and waving and talking to passersby who might stop for a chat. Above all though, he loved his family. His children and grandchildren were the highlight of his life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Kathy Caldwell, Carolyn Caldwell Strickland, Sandra Caldwell Cooke; and a brother, James Edward “Tom” Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Fay Gibson Caldwell; his children, Sherry Womble (Michael) of Manchester, Beverly Bonner (Bill), Kim Hobbs (Greg) and Bill Caldwell, all of the Cove Community; 2 sisters, Patricia Styles of Manchester and Barbara Jean Blackwell (Eddie) of Franklin, Indiana; 7 grandchildren, Michele Womble, Abby Bonner, Austin Hobbs, Andrew Hobbs, Marilee Caldwell, Will Caldwell, and Laura Dollar; an uncle, Ben Gilson (Frances) of Talbotton; and a very special friend, Buck Prather.

Flowers will be accepted or those who desire may make memorial contributions to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation
