When the Civil War came on he enlisted in Co. A 33d Indiana Volunteers, serving throughout the war. His ability as a leader was recognized when he was made Captain of his company. He was in a number of hard fought engagements,was wounded, and was with Sherman on his famous march to the sea.
During the war he was a correspondent to the Martinsville Reporter.Articles and some of his letters are on file at the Morgan County Library at Martinsville, Indiana.
He married Lucy A. Dane on April 14, 1864. They had six children.
