Our dear little Hansa died unexpectedly on June 8, 2007.

Hansa was the first(and only) elephant born at the Woodland Park Zoo in its 100 year history. It was a very exciting time for the city of Seattle when it was announced that one of our elephants, Chai, was pregnant. The pregnancy was well chronicalled in the local media, and when the delivery went well and both mother and daughter came through it healthy, the city rejoiced. A contest was held to name "our" new addition, and Hansa, which means "supreme happiness" in Thai was the winning submission. Zoo attendance swelled after her birth and a trip to the zoo wasn't complete without stopping to see little Hansa.

Hansa had begun to feel ill the week preceeding her death. She was off her food and seemed a bit tired. Zoo vets couldn't find anything definitively wrong with her. They gave her fluids, vitamins and antibiotics just in case and felt that she was getting better. She was found dead on Friday morning, June 8th with her Mother at her side. At this point, her cause of death is still unknown.

Rest in Peace little girl. You brought joy to everyone who had the pleasure to know you.
