William Norris Tigert of Pittsburg passed away April 25, 2019 at Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Winnsboro at the age of 82. Norris was born July 12, 1936 in Daingerfield, the tenth of eleven children born to Earl and Cleo Turner Tigert. He attended school in Daingerfield where he was an all-district and honorable mention all-district half back in football playing both defense and offense. He played all four years on the varsity team. He excelled also in boxing and track.
He followed in his brothers’ footsteps by joining the US Army where he became a military police officer and received a medal of good conduct. After an honorable discharge he went to work at Lone Star Steel in security and retired after 42 years.
Norris was a member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant. He is survived by his wife Mary Jane Tigert, four daughters; Barbara Whitely and husband Greg, Carmen Doskocil and husband Greg, Dana Tigert, Julia Holt and husband Robert, two granddaughters, four grandsons, three great granddaughters, one great grandson, numerous nieces and nephews and many great friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Cleo Turner Tigert and siblings Dovie Knight, Buddy Tigert, Fred Tigert, Thelma Thigpen, Marvin Tigert, Dale Tigert, Jack Tigert, Bobby Tigert, Allie Tosh and Sue Gossett.
The funeral service will be held Monday, April 29th at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Dr. Clint Davis officiating with burial at Ebenezer Cemetery in Camp County. His son in laws and grandsons will serve as pallbearers, and Lone Star Steel Plant Protection will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be Sunday, April 28th from 4:00p.m. until 6:00p.m. at the Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Pittsburg.
