Alysia grew up in Richmond, Virginia. She attended Harry F. Byrd Middle School 1989-1992. After her death, there was a petition to change the name of the school to the Alysia C. Burton Middle School. The school was eventually renamed Quioccasin Middle School. She graduated Godwin High School in 1996. She was an honors student, a gifted artist, and a community leader. For many summers, she served young people as a lifeguard at Canterbury Pool. After high school she attended The College of William & Mary where she majored in accounting and became an active member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. After graduating in 2000, she joined the prestigious Cantor Fitzgerald financial firm, working in Lower Manhattan on the 104th floor of One World Trade Center. She married fellow William & Mary alum and Richmond native Anthony Basmajian and the two of them lovingly raised their beautiful baby girl until her untimely death.

Anthony's brothers, Aaron and Alden, along with many friends and family, helped establish the Alysia Burton Basmajian Scholarship Endowment at The College of William & Mary, designated for 4-year arts students. Contributions can be sent to the The College of William and Mary Foundation and marked for the Alysia Burton Basmajian Scholarship Endowment at Office of University Advancement, P.O. Box 8795, Williamsburg, VA 23187-8795.
