SHORT ILLNESS PROVES FATAL TO DR. BACKENSTOSE WELL KNOWN VETERINARIAN OF EUREKA DIES AT AGE OF 81 YEARS

Dr. Edward E. Backenstose, city meat inspector who for several years and one of the best known residents of Eureka, died early yesterday morning in this city after an illness of several weeks due to infirmities arising from his extreme age. He was a native of Pennsylvania, 81 years of age. Dr. Backenstose served in the Civil War where he was thrice wounded in recent years the old wounds, aggravated by bullets he carried in his body caused him much pain. He continued his work as meat inspector up to a few weeks ago, how - ever, and refused to give it up until he became so weak that it was necessary to take him to a hospital. Two sisters, both residing in the east, survive him. They are Sarah B. Cranston and Elizabeth Backenstose, of Vassar, Michigan. During his long residence in Eureka Dr. Backenstose followed his profession of veterinarian. He also took an active interest in public work and lor many years practically gave his services gratis in order that the office of meat and food inspector might properly handled. He was highly respected by all who knew him. 'This afternoon at 2 o'clock the funeral will be held from the Oliver-Sanders undertaking parlors under the auspices of Humbold Lodge. No. 79, F. & A M. The Rev. John T. Shurtleff will officiate. Interment will take place at Ocean View cemetery
