Sarah "Sally" Lynn was born in Buncombe Co., NC, daughter of James Lynn, Jr., and Margaret White. Her father and her grandfather, James Lynn, Sr., while residents of Mecklinburg Co., NC, served in the same Virginia Infantry unit in the Revolutionary War. Sarah was a niece of Gen. James White, founder of Knoxville, TN, and a first cousin of Tennessee judge, senator and Whig presidential candidate Hugh Lawson White.
While Sarah was very young, the Lynn Family moved to Henderson Co., KY. About 1815 they moved to Maury Co., TN, and a year and a half later to Madison Co., AL. Here Sarah was married to Isaac Holmes on Nov. 19, 1819. They lived in Morgan Co., AL, until they moved about 1845 to Itawamba Co., MS, and then in 1867 to Winn Parish, LA. They were parents of 11 children: Mary Ann H. Holly, Z. W. "Bird" Holmes, James L. Holmes, Hugh White Holmes, William Holmes, Margaret Ann H. Williams, Lavina "Vinie" H. Smith, Sarah Ruth H. Gray, Ellen Jane Holmes, Ruth H. Guyton and Isaac Reeves Holmes.
