Laura Mae (Bingham) Robertson was the daughter of Paul Rea Bingham and Ruby E. (Snodderly) Bingham.
She was born In Louisiana June 10, 1919. *See possible explanation of birth location on father's memorial.*

In the 1920 Census, she and her parents were living in Missouri with her mother's parents. They shortly moved to Braddyville, Page Co., Iowa, where they owned a home and father owned a mechanic garage. The family, now with 4 children, were all living in Braddyville, Iowa, right next to Missouri, in 1935. Laura Mae graduated from high school there in 1936. Ruby and the two oldest children, Laura Mae and Vernon, left Iowa in 1938, were in living together in Portland, Oregon in 1940. Paul remained in Iowa with their two youngest sons, Marvin and Norman.

After relocating to Portland, Laura Mae worked in a restaurant for $20 a week, and was a member of the Cooks and Bartenders Union. She later went to a business school a half day and worked for the school a half day to pay for tuition, while also working nights and weekends in a restaurant. During the war years she worked for Industrial Claims, an insurance company that handled insurance for “high risk” industries.

In July of 1941, Laura Mae married Merlen L. Robertson in Washington. Her wedding ring was from a jewelry store in Portland. It cost $30, and was bought on an installment plan of $5 a week. Laura Mae would recount how the girls in her office were envious because she actually had a diamond, although it was just a chip!

She and Merlen moved to Denver, Colorado in October 1947. Because of her union connections, she got a job with the Joint Council of Teamster Locals. She started working for Local 17, the freight dock workers, where she worked for seven years before being fired when a new manager came in.

Laura Mae and Merlen then moved to Grand Junction, Colorado when Laura Mae got a job working for the Atomic Energy Commission. The paperwork to get a clearance was incredible. It took her weeks to prepare it. She worked there about one year, and in 1962 returned to work for the Teamsters in their Grand Junction office.

Merlen died in 1985 and Laura Mae died September 18, 2018.
