Catherine P. Maestas, Cathy, Cat, to her friends, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on April 10, 2019.
Cathy attended grade school at San Ignacio Catholic School in Martínez Town, then went on to St. Mary’s for her high school years. After high school, she attended the University of New Mexico where she earned her Bachelor’s degree with a major in Spanish and a minor in English.
In August of 1968, Cathy taught Spanish and English at Moriarty High School. Her motivation for accepting the position in Moriarty was simple – starting salaries were quite a bit higher than what the Albuquerque School System was offering at the time. Cathy’s initial plans were to teach there for a few years and then move on, however, she enjoyed her students and wonderful colleagues that she stayed for 26 years. Cathy retired in 1994. Being retired was very relaxing and enjoyable. Cathy spent most days reading, watching television, socializing with friends or her very favorite pastime – going to the casino.
As Cathy said, “I have had a very satisfying life. Never married with no regrets, loved single life and especially being accountable to no one!”
As Cathy mentioned, “If I could live my life over again, there is little I would change.”

Cathy was predeceased by her parents, Robert "Bob" Maestas and Irene Martínez Maestas Gómez, sister, Cecilia Martínez, brother-in-law, Lawrence Martínez, brother, Richard Martínez, step-father, Fred Gómez.
Cathy is survived by her sister-in-law, Arlene Martínez, cousin, Lily Martínez and many nieces and nephews.
Cathy is also survived by good friends, Father Jerry and Father Andy, the staff of San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church, Miguel Chávez and Gerald Armijo.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, April 26, at 9:00 a.m. at San Felipe De Neri Catholic Church, 2005 North Plaza NW, Albuquerque, followed by a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. There will be a Graveside Service at 12:30 p.m. at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd. NE.
