William N. Smith is a little difficult to track down. Here is what I have been able to gather through Census, Illinois Records, family notes, and a book by Professor J. H.G. Brinkerhoff on the area.

Isaac Smith was the first settler in what was to become Walnut Hill, Illinois. He had a son Miller E. Smith. Miller is William's father. It appears his mother is the first wife of Miller Smith. Brinkerhoff calls her Polly Wilson (Porter)Smith but I have also seen her called Mary elsewhere. He indicates they came in 1830 which means William was likely born in Illinois. His birth and death dates are unknown as his tombstone doesn't show them. It is a Government Head Stone.

William served in the Civil War as a Corporal in Company F Unit 150 IL US INF. He joined Feb 7, 1865 in Alton, IL and mustered out Jan 16, 1866 in Atlanta, Ga.

As for William, not much is known. He had a daughter Alice Smith who married Samuel J. Turkington. She remarried several times after Samuel died.
