Joseph was the son of Samuel Yates and Lavinia Alverson of Tenn. Samuel was killed in a feud in White Co. TN. Samuel took part in the famous charge of the Peach Orchard in the first battle of Shiloh, TN. General Johnston was killed leading that charge.
