Mr. Stoddard was a retiree at the time of his death but performed maintenance work at the Mountain Church of Christ in Tucson. He was killed by a mentally ill individual at a public "Congress-on-your-corner" event for U.S. Rep. Gabriel Giffords. He sacrificed his life to protect his wife Mavanell, who was also shot.
He lived in various places including Sequim, Wash., Ashton, Nev., La Pine and Sweet Home in Oregon, and Pinedale and Tucson in Arizona. He married Mavanell A. Terry on 17 Feb 1996 in Clark Co., Nevada.

Dorwan Clifford Stoddard (Dory) 1934 - 2011 Dory was a born again Christian, who loved the Lord and was an active member of the Mountain View Church of Christ. Born to Shirley and Rose Stoddard on March 7, 1934 he was a fourth generation Arizonan and a Tucson native.
Dory met his first wife, Arlene Stoddard, in their youth while attending school together in Tucson and wed in 1953. They enjoyed 43 wonderful years of marriage until Arlene's passing in 1996. Dorwan and Arlene were the proud parents of four boys, Dan (56), Dale (55), Ron (54) and James (52) Stoddard.
Following in his father's footsteps, Shirley Stoddard, Dorwan was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 12 & 428 from the years of 1954 to 1988. During this time he worked on numerous construction projects to include the Nevada Test Site. Dorwan and Arlene opened "Stod's Place" in Ash Springs, NV in 1970. Starting as a hot dog stand for their sons and the local kids it quickly grew into a café, gas station and convenience store helping to employee several locals and greatly warming Dorwan's heart. After selling "Stod's" in 1977, they returned to their beloved hometown of Tucson until retiring in 1988.
After retiring from 34 years of dedicated hard work, Dorwan and Arlene spent their time between Pine Dale, AZ and Squim, WA where they enjoyed their favorite family hobbies of whitewater rafting, fishing and hunting. In retirement, Dorwan also kept himself busy by volunteering to help his family whenever needed while earning the title "Mr. Fixit".
After Arlene's passing in 1995, Dorwan returned to Tucson where he met Mavanell McDaniel Terry (Mavy), his former sixth Grade sweetheart. They rekindled their love and spent the next beautiful 15 years serving the Lord Jesus Christ and the Tucson Community. Their love for each other and desire to explore the world was expressed through their many travels to 28 different countries and all 50 states in their RV with their dog, Tux, in tow.
Dory's final demonstration of love was demonstrated on Saturday, January 8, 2011 when he heroically sacrificed his life by throwing his body on top of Mavy in order to protect her during the tragic shooting at Congresswoman Gifford's gathering.
Dory will be greatly missed by his and Arlene's beloved four boys, Dan, Dale, Ron and James and Dory's and Mavy's four daughters, Angie (Angela Robinson), Penny (Wilson), Carlyn and Tammy their spouses and his 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
