S M Barnes died Monday, December 23 at noon, at his home in this city. Heart failure following seven years suffering from diabetes was the cause of his death. He was confined to his bed about three weeks.
Mr Barnes was born in Deerfield, Ohio March 12, 1845. He came to Jefferson county in 1869 and homesteaded near Bower. On December 25, 1870, he was married to Louisa Baur, who survives him with two children, Clarence W. Barnes of this county and Mrs Ella Mack of Blue Springs. He also leaves a brother, Wm Barnes of Fort Collins, Colo and three sisters, Mrs Mary B Clark of Lincoln, Mrs Lavinia Annis of McPherson, Kans and Mrs Eliza Hedges of Meridian, Idaho, besides eight granchildren.
In 1877, the family moved to Fairbury where they resided for ten years, moving then to a farm west of Fairbury and remaining there until last spring when they mvoed to Fairbury, where Mr Barnes had built a new home at the corner of C and 8th sts.
The funeral was held from the residence Thursday afternoon, December 26 at 1 o'clock, Rev. Holmes of Fairbury and Rev Forsyth of Bower, Christian ministers, officiating. The remains were interred in the Fairbury cemetery.
Mr Barnes was a man of absolute integrity and rugged worth. For many years he was crippled and was able to get about only with the aid of crutches, yet he was not only a successful farmer but a man who took great interest in public affairs and could always be counted as on the right side, tho (sic) he never forced his opinions except in a kindly way which won him many friends. He was a striking example of the power of character over adverse circumstances.
