ELDON — Helen Showman, 91, of Eldon, formerly of Hedrick, passed away on May 4, 2013 at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.
Helen was born on June 29, 1921 in Ashville, Ga., the daughter of John and Beatrice Fortune.
Following high school, Helen served in the Women’s Army Corp as a private, from 1944-46. In 1973 she married David A. Showman Sr. in Gadsden, Ala. She had previously been married to Benjamin Floyd Carnes. Helen had been an airplane mechanic in the Women’s Army Corp, and then worked for 16 years as a secretary at Anniston Army Depot in Bynum, Ala.
For the past 41 years she has been a loving housewife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include her husband David Showman Sr. of Eldon; two sons, David F. Carnes of Jacksonville, Ala., and David A. Showman Jr. and wife Julie of Eldon; five daughters, Katharina Showman of Cedar Rapids, Donna Smith of Hilton Head, S.C., Susan Rinker and husband George of Eldon, Lisa Walker and husband Eric of Ft. Carson, Colo., and Elaine Reinholz and husband Joe of North Liberty; special grandson whom she raised, Christopher Molyneux and wife Tabitha of West Gate; 23 additional grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Benjamin Floyd Carnes, Sr., her son Benjamin Floyd Carnes Jr., three brothers, and one sister.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon; Pastor Dave Albert officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Eldon Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Grace Funeral Care in Eldon. A memorial fund is being established to assist the family with funeral expenses.
