Enlisted in World War 2 on 23 Nov 1942 in Tacoma, Washington in the U.S. Army as a Private. Earl later served in the Army Air Corps as a Right Gunner on a B 17. In 1944 his plane was shot down over Germany and he spent a year as a P.O.W.

He later married Betty and they had one daughter.
Earl worked for the Rail Road in Hillyard.
