John Hoxsie for many years one of the county's influential residents, died suddenly at his home in Acme shortly after noon Tuesday.
Mr. Hoxsie was an important political figure in the region until his virtual retirement several years ago. He has served as clerk, treasurer and supervisor from Acme township and for 12 years was the county treasurer.
He was also prominent in fraternal circles, having been past master of East Bay Masonic lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason. On March 26 of this year the East Bay lodge held a party honoring Mr. Hoxsie who had been a member since 1874.
Born in Palmyra township, Lenawee county, Mich., July 13, 1851, Mr. Hoxsie came to this region with his parents in 1864. With his father he started the first sawmill in Acme township which they conducted for ten years. Mr. Hoxsie later founded the Acme Wollen Mills which he managed for many years. He married Miss Jennie Richmond of Peninsula township who preceded him in death February 6, 1933.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bertha O'Brien of Acme, and a brother Dr. A. T. Hoxsie of Detroit.
The body was taken to the Hibbard Funeral Chapel where it will remain until time of service, to be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30, in charge of the East Bay Masonic Lodge, Rev. Howard R. Towne of the First Congregational church officiating. They body will be placed in the mausoleum until spring.
