She was married to the late John William Helfrich on May 11, 1946 in Mare Island, Calif.
She was a babysitter for many families in the Urbana area. She graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 1945 where she was a cheerleader, a member of the school newspaper, a Brownie leader and on the basketball team. Vera was an avid bowler and her team won the Ohio State Bowling Championship in 1962 and for a number of consecutive years after that. She loved to go shopping at Goodwill and Big Lots and her favorite restaurant was LaPalma.
Survivors include her son, William Shawn Helfrich, Urbana; daughters Teresa L. Grube of Dayton, Darinda Jean Saylor of West Liberty; a brother, Nelson Lebkisher of Riverside; seven grandchildren, Mindy Helen Teach of Urbana, Maggie C. Kinser of Franklin, Tyler A Davisson of Urbana, Gagriel S. McNutt of West Liberty, Abraham S. McNutt of West Liberty, Gunther S. Helfrich of West Liberty, Bryce Victor Helfrich of Urbana; great-grandchildren are Gauge Austin and Ryder Own Teach, Karli C. and Aiden N. Kinser, Seth Lee McNutt and Mkynlea I. Helfrich.
She is a also survived by her special friend, Juan Andres Cruz and her special care giver, Trent Nourse.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Mindy Sue Helfrich; a brother, William Lebkisher; and a sister, Mary Ann Carpenter.
A graveside service will be on Friday, June 8, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. The burial is at Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana.
