FARMVILLE - Horace Ray Allen, 89, died at home Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014.
A Pitt County native, Horace was born in Marlboro on May 24, 1925, to the late Paul J. Allen Sr. and Cleora Bailey Allen. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Caribbean and South Pacific with a rank of Radarman 2nd Class. Following the war, Horace worked as the manager of Firestone in Kinston and Jacksonville. He later returned to Farmville in 1955 with his family and worked as a merchant and owner of Allen & Jones Furniture Company.
After retiring from the business in 1989, Horace enjoyed spending his mornings talking with friends over coffee, working in his yard, playing golf, traveling, and repairing things around his home and for others. He also loved his family dearly and enjoyed sharing quality time with them.
Horace will be remembered by many as a longtime faithful member of the Farmville United Methodist Church. He served numerous terms as the church Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, Usher Coordinator, and President of the Vereen Sunday School Class, and was also a member of the Administrative and Finance Board. In 1995, Horace was honored as Layman of the Year for his years of dedication and loyal service to the church.
Over the years, Horace enjoyed being an active participant in his community, as well. He was a 32nd degree mason and member of the Farmville Masonic Lodge No. 517, a charter member of the Farmville Lions Club and the V.F.W, and a former member of the American Legion. He was also a former member of the Farmville Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Board of Directors, the Town of Farmville's Planning Board Committee, Zoning Board Committee, and Cable Study Committee, and also served on the Farmville Golf and Country Club's Board of Directors.
Horace is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Jean Mosley Allen of the home; daughter, Carol Lynn Heath and husband, Jeff, of Farmville; grandchildren, Jessica Allen Heath of Clayton, Landon King Heath of Farmville, and Alex Collin Allen of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by a infant daughter, Cleora Ann Allen; a son, Donnie Ray Allen; brothers, Paul Allen Jr., Willie Allen Sr., Wade Allen, Howard "Pete" Allen, and Melton Allen; sisters, Dorothy Allen, Edna Allen, Thelma Allen, Helen Smith, Mary Lee Skinner, Marie Gatling, and Lucille Marshburn.
Funeral service will be held at Farmville United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m.. Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Price and the Rev. David Harrington will be officiating. Visitation will be held tonight from 7-9 at Farmville Funeral Home and other times at the home.
