Annabell Mobley, 81

MARRERO, La. -- Annabell (Esponge) Mobley, 81, died peacefully on April 9, 2008 at West Jefferson Hospital in Marrero, La. Annabell was the beloved wife of the late Fornest A. Mobley., who died in 1981. Annabell was born in Golden Meadow, La., on Aug. 14, 1926, the daughter of Sarah (Callais) Esponge and Raoul Esponge.
Annabell and Fornest were childhood sweethearts who married before he left for Europe during World War II. Their first child, Jack, was born while Fornest was in France. Ten years later another son, Wade, was born. Annabell was a homemaker, mother and wife. She was a fabulous cook, and prepared traditional Cajun fare with expertise much to her family's delight. Her home and her family were her comfort.
The family later moved to Harvey, La., and then to Marrero, La. Annabell worked for the local school district in the Pittman School cafeteria. She learned to drive at a late age and was terrified to back up the car. She only parked where she could drive out of a spot. This created a challenge for the family, but every night her husband would back the car out of the driveway and head it toward the street for Annabell to go to work the next day. After his death, the good neighbors did the same, until she retired her license.
After evacuating Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina, she came to Pepperell to live with her son, Jack, and his family for six months. She enjoyed the Dee family company and participated in family weddings, christenings and holidays while she was here. She was amazed and thrilled when she visited the Registry of Motor Vehicles in Lowell, that the employees took up a collection and gave her money to buy a warm coat. Dr. Lindermuth in Pepperell took wonderful care of her poodle, "Missy," while she was in this area. Dr. Cynthia Sprague and Dr. Thomas LaMattina took wonderful care of Annabell during her stay here in Massachusetts. She did not enjoy the cold weather and was anxious to return home. In March o2006, she returned to her home, which had been rebuilt by her sons, Jack and Wade, and her grandson, Nathan.
She is survived by her eldest son, Jack, and his wife, Sherry (Dee) Mobley, of Pepperell, formerly of Concord; and son Wade and his wife, Cynthia (Latapie) of Marrero, La. In addition to her children, survivors include two granddaughters, Windy Mobley, of Marrero, and Stacy Kallies and her husband, Robert, of Gretna, La., and her one grandson, Nathan Mobley, of Pepperell. Her first great-grandchild was expected in June and she was looking forward to the event. She is also survived by one sister, Melba (Esponge) Cheramie and her husband, Edison, in Golden Meadow, La. She was the sister of the late Bernice Plaisance and Lilia Berteau. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews in Louisiana as well as her good friend Myrtis Chimento, wonderful neighbors and friends who looked out for her well-being for many years.
Funeral services were held at the Mothe Funeral Chapel, in Marrero, on April 16. Reverend Lance Campo, parochial vicar of Immaculate Conception Church, presided at the funeral Mass. Interment was in Westlawn Cemetery, Gretna, La.
