Civil War: John Jackson Layfield Sr. and three of his sons served in the Civil War, with one not returning home. John Jackson Layfield Jr. and George Layfield, and their Father John Jackson Layfield Sr. who was 58 years of age when the Civil War began, volunteered to the Union Army together and served from 20 May 1861 - 27 August 1865, 4 yrs 7 days PO - Cokeley. Their ranks upon mustering out: Pvt Co D 6th Regiment West Virginia Infantry. John Jackson Layfield Sr.'s eldest child Mary Elizabeth Layfield was married to Uriah D. Shrader, who joined the Union Army Co D, 6th Regiment WV Infantry & served with the Layfields. Uriah & Mary Elizabeth Shrader are buried in Layfields Cemetery.

John Layfield Sr.'s third son who served for the Union, James Layfield, served in the US Army: Pvt Company K, 10th Regiment West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, 25th Aug 1862, PO, Cairo, West Virginia. James was injured in the Third Battle of Winchester on 19 Sept 1864. After the last battle of the Civil War at Saylor's Creek, Virgina, James Layfield died 4 Apr 1865 from disease at Burksville, Virginia, close by the Saylor Creek battlefield area at the age of 32. His wife was Elizabeth Moats Layfield, daughter of Peter Moats, early pioneer of Ritchie County, and Rachel Grogg Moats. Elizabeth was the niece of John Layfield Sr.'s wife Elizabeth Moats, who was the sister of Peter Moats. Elizabeth raised their six sons, Charles, Peter, Jacob, Samuel, Joseph and William I. She remained a widow and is buried in Layfields Cemetery.
