Jonathan was a 19th century farmer, lawyer, politician, and War of 1812 veteran. During the war, he was with his regiment in Washington and saw the British burn the United States Capital. He helped drive the British from Washington. In 1824, Jonathan led a mounted fifty man volunteer escort for General Lafayette when Lafayette went to see President Madison at Montpelier during his tour of America in 1824 - 1825.
Jonathan was married twice. Circa 1816, he married Martha Dandridge Ball, the great niece of George Washington. They had two daughters, Frances Ann Gibson and Martha Dandridge Gibson. After his wife's death, he remarried on 28 Dec 1824. His second wife was Mary Williams Shackelford. Jonathan and Mary had 11 children - 5 sons (William St. Pierre, Jonathan, Edwin "Ned," John Williams, and Eustace) and 6 daughters (Mary Catlett, Lucy Ellen, Ann, Mildred, Susan, and Elizabeth).
