Excerpt from his son Phil: I am announcing the death of a WWII Navy/ Marine Pacific medic, HC-1, Robert E. Reindl, of Florence, Oregon. Died on Dec. 24th, 2017, at Veteran Administration Hospital, Boise, Idaho from brain damage, dementia, and other related problems. I am late in announcing this as our family was waiting for the death of his wife of 72+ years, which happened today from the ravages of Parkinson's disease. They will be cremated, dad already, and laid to rest at Florence, Oregon cemetery where they both grew up. This was another WWII serviceman who kept all his battles private from us all until near the end of his life. Such heroic men and women they were and the battles they fought and kept shut about after they returned home to make the lives of their families so much better. Both of these, my parents, are the true heroes of our country.

Jan. 24, 2018 — Robert E. (Bob) Reindl, 94, formerly of Florence, passed away Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, at the Veterans Hospital in Boise, Idaho.

Bob is survived by his wife of 72 years, Willie (Huntington) Reindl; two children: Susann (and Kim) Ecklund of Idaho; and Phil Reindl of Oregon; two grandchildren: Heidi (and Mike) Harper of North Carolina, and Andy Reindl of Ohio.

Bob was preceded in death by his son, Melvin, in 1962.

Born in Havre, Mont., in November 1923, the second son of Emmet and Vesta Reindl, his family relocated to Florence, Ore., in 1930, where Bob remained a long-time resident.

After high school, Bob joined the U.S. Navy in October 1942. He served for three years as a hospital corpsman and field medic while assigned to the 2nd Marine Division in the south Pacific during WWII.

In 1945, he was reassigned back to the Navy and served three more years aboard various ships, travelling throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas.

Bob had a passion for the outdoors and, in 1959, began his 25-year career with the U.S. Forest Service. Beginning at the Mapleton Ranger Station, he later transferred to the Hebo Ranger Station, where he completed his service and retired in 1984.

Bob and Willie then moved to Dallas, Ore., where he enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels, RVing, gardening, family time and membership at Trinity Lutheran Church.

As friends and family will attest, he was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life, and had a story for every adventure.

A life celebration and honors burial will be held for Bob in Oregon at a future date; friends and family will be notified in advance.
