Stella Louise Cotton Grise, 104

Stella Louise Cotton Grise, 104, died Sunday morning, June 3, at Telford Terrace in Richmond. Born on January 24, 1903, in Nelson County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late William Macajah Cotton and Leona Ashby Cotton. She received her early education in Nelson County, and after the death of her father operated the family farm with her mother and sister. Later she clerked in her uncle's general store in Van Buren, Kentucky.

Mrs. Grise attended Western Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College in Bowling Green, KY, where she met and married Presley M. Grise, later chairman of the English Department at Eastern Kentucky State College. She was married to Dr. Grise for 59 years until his death in 1981.

After earning her bachelor's degree from Western, Mrs. Grise taught in one room schools in Warren, Spencer and Logan Counties. Later she earned an M.A. in Education at Eastern Kentucky State College and taught at Athens Elementary School in Fayette County.

Mrs. Grise joined the First United Methodist Church when she moved to Richmond in 1930 and was active there until failing health made it impossible for her to attend.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Grise was preceded in death by a son, Thomas M. Grise of Louisville, and a sister, Ruby Cotton Curry of Campbellsville. She is survived by two sons, Dr. William P. Grise and his wife Mary Luster Grise, Dr. Robert N. Grise and his wife Martha Spurlin Grise; and a daughter-in law, Juanita Rowlette Grise, of Louisville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Robert Owen Grise and William M. Grise of Richmond; Elizabeth Jane Grise and David Presley Grise, of Lexington; Thomas Mack Grise, Keri Anne Applegate, and Amy Fortkamp of Louisville; and Susan Elaine McNulty of Muscatine, Iowa. She is also survived by Mary Grise‚s children, James Robert Wall, Dewayne Gregory Wall, and Connie Diane Miles; and by thirteen great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.

The Reverend Eugene Strange, senior pastor of FUMC, and retired FUMC pastor Bob Wallace will conduct a celebration of Mrs. Grise's life at 11 on Wednesday morning at the Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Richmond Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas Grise, III, Robbie Grise, Zachary Grise, Alex Grise, D. J. Glass, and Christopher Forman. Honorary pallbearers will be Doris Coffman, Richard and Lou Johnston, William and Jo Luxon, Marie Mitchell, Mildred Rieker, William and Norine Vasey, and Ginger Wallace.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home between 5 and 8 on Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Richmond First United Methodist Church.
