In 1917, about five- and one-half years after Samuel Crooks's death, times were hard for Almina Crooks, so she put the six youngest children in an orphanage in Des Moines, Iowa, for a short time. Two of the children were adopted, almost immediately, with Almina's permission. Bert was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Rockwell, Iowa.
Less than four years after Bert went to live with his new parents, he was taken seriously ill and rushed to the Fort Dodge Hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendicitis, but Bert was too weak and died on the eve of January 13, 1921, at 5:30 p.m. He was 17 years, 11 months, and 6 days old. He is buried in Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Calhoun County, Iowa.
